The Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit is a specialized division dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of maritime environments within the county. Comprising highly trained deputies with expertise in maritime law enforcement, this unit plays a crucial role in safeguarding the 39+ miles of the Intracoastal Waterway (I.C.W), 57+ miles of beaches, 45+ miles of the Cape Fear River and all other bodies of water within the county.
Key Responsibilities:
- Waterway Surveillance and Enforcement:
- The Marine Patrol Unit conducts regular patrols along rivers, and coastal areas to monitor for any signs of criminal activity, safety hazards, or violations of maritime laws. They enforce regulations related to boating safety, navigation, and environmental protection.
- Search and Rescue Operations: In times of emergencies, such as boating accidents, drownings, or distress calls, the Marine Patrol Unit responds swiftly to conduct search and rescue operations. Their specialized training in waterborne rescue techniques allows them to save lives and provide assistance to those in need.
- Boat Inspections and Safety Checks: To promote boating safety and compliance with regulations, the unit performs routine inspections of vessels. They ensure that boats are equipped with necessary safety equipment, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and navigation lights, and educate boaters on safe practices.
- Public Education and Outreach: Recognizing the importance of community engagement, the unit conducts educational programs and outreach initiatives to raise awareness about boating safety, environmental conservation, and responsible use of water resources. They provide boater safety courses, distribute informational materials, and participate in community events.
- Security Operations: In collaboration with port authorities and other agencies, the Marine Patrol Unit implements security measures to protect critical infrastructure, such as ports, marinas, and waterfront facilities, from potential threats and acts of terrorism.
- Environmental Protection: With a commitment to preserving marine ecosystems, the unit monitors water quality, responds to reports of pollution or hazardous materials spills, and works to mitigate environmental damage. They collaborate with environmental agencies to enforce laws related to water pollution and habitat preservation.
