Major Sammy Turner plays a critical role at the Sheriff’s Office as the administrator and facilitator over agency training. Major Tuner is responsible for maintaining a training program that meets the standards of federal, state, local and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission training requirements.
Major Turner earned his Basic Law Enforcement Training certification through Cape Fear Community College in 1997. He began his career in law enforcement with the Holden Beach Police Department where he served until 1999 at which time he came to work with the Civil Division at the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. Later that same year he was transferred to patrol, serving as a Patrol Deputy. In 2003, Major Turner was promoted to Sergeant over the Patrol Division. Demonstrating a talent and passion for training, Major Turner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant over the Training Division. He was again promoted to the rank of Captain in 2010 then to his current rank of Major in 2022.
Major Turner was born and raised in Tennessee until high school when he moved to Southeastern North Carolina and attended John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington. Major Turner is married to Holly, who serves as First Sergeant over the School Resource Officer Unit at BCSO, and has three children and one grandchild.
