To maintain the safety and security of the facility, the detention staff and the community, the following policies and procedures have been put in place at the Brunswick County Detention Center. They have been developed to meet the evolving needs of both the facility and the community.

Public Fingerprinting

Public FingerprintingThe Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office offers non-criminal fingerprinting services as a courtesy to the general public Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.. Fingerprinting is done at the Brunswick County Detention Center located at 70 Stamp Act Drive, Bolivia NC 28422. Fingerprints are provided free of charge.

Fingerprinting Requirements

  • Must provide a government issued photo I.D. such as driver’s license, State I.D. card, military I.D., etc.
  • No persons under the age of eighteen (18) can be fingerprinted without a parent or legal guardian.
  • Fingerprinting can only be done for the purpose of employment or state licensing.
  • Must provide the name and address of the agency or business being fingerprinted for.

Bonding Procedures

There are currently three (3) ways to post a bond for an inmate incarcerated at the Brunswick County Detention Center.

  • Hire a Bail Bondsman. Their fee is typically 15% of the total bond amount.
  • Post a bond in cash.
  • Post a property bond. When posting a property bond, if the bond amount is greater than $4,999.00 you will be required to hire an attorney to prepare a Deed of Trust.

Inmate Care Packages

Inmates at the Detention Center are allowed to receive an initial care package from the public within their first fourteen (14) days of confinement. Inmates on writ from another county cannot receive care packages or have money placed on their Inmate Account. Any items not on the list below will be denied. Everything listed below may be purchased by inmates through the Inmate Commissary if they have funds available in their Inmate Account.

Allowed Items

  • Three (3) White Socks (can have grey on toe or heel area)
  • Three (3) White Underwear (can be boxers or briefs, can have writing on band only)
  • Three (3) White Wireless (no metal) bras
  • Two (2) White or Off-White Thermal Shirts
  • Two (2) pair of White or Off-White Thermal Pants
  • One (1) Paperback Bible
  • One (1) Paperback Puzzle or Word Search Book (no staples)
  • Three (3) Paperback Novels (no pictures allowed). All books will be donated to the Inmate Library at the Detention Center after the inmate has finished reading them. If you would like the inmate to keep the book, it must be ordered directly from the publisher and mailed to the Detention Center.  Please be mindful of the content.
  • One (1) Deck of Playing Cards (Ace, 2, 3, etc.)
  • Postage Stamps, any number, but must remain on the paper they came on from the post office.  No stamps on envelopes will be accepted.
  • Fifteen (15) Sheets of White Paper (notebook paper acceptable)
  • Fifteen (15) White Envelopes (no security envelopes, no writing on envelopes)
  • Two (2) Pictures (4″ X 6″ maximum).  No inappropriate pictures will be accepted.

After the initial package including all the items above is delivered to the inmate within the first fourteen (14) days of confinement, the items with a green check beside them can be mailed to the inmate to restock their supplies. Items with a black check are a one-time allowance.

Any items sent to an inmate that is not on the list above will be returned to sender or placed in the inmate’s personal property.

Inmate Property

Inmates are allowed to possess the following items:

  • County-Issued Property: Authorized medication, one plastic property container (except weekenders), one mattress, one blanket, two sheets, one bath towel, one washcloth, one inmate uniform, one set of footwear.
  • Personal Items: 3 pairs of white underwear/white bra (no underwire), 3 pairs of white socks, 15 envelopes and 15 sheets of writing paper, 1 paperback book, 1 paperback Bible, 1 puzzle book, inmate handbook and 1 deck of cards. Your family will be allowed to bring these listed items to you. You are allowed this 1 package only. After this you must purchase any items you need off canteen that is provided to you.

Inmate Handbook

Every inmate at our facility is provided with an Inmate Handbook to assist them in adjusting to confinement at the Brunswick County Detention Center. The information and procedures described in this Inmate Handbook apply to all inmates and detainees, regardless of their length of stay or the reason for their incarceration.
